China supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, integrity and legitimate rights, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday in response to a related query.

Spokesperson Lin Jian noted the U.S. launched a military strike against Venezuela and took President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by force a month ago.

"This hegemonic behavior seriously violates international law, infringes upon Venezuela's sovereignty, and threatens peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean," Lin said, adding that China firmly opposes such acts.

He said China will work with the international community to firmly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and safeguard international fairness and justice.
