China is to ban hidden car door handles from 2027, becoming the first country to do so. New rules stipulate every car must have a mechanical release on both the inside and outside of all doors apart from the boot. 

The design, first popularized by Elon Musk's Tesla, has raised safety concerns following a number of crashes. Passengers were trapped when power failures meant the doors couldn't be opened.
