Uruguay's President Yamandú Orsi is on his first state visit to China since taking office in 2025. He is also the first Latin American head of state to visit China in 2026. The visit comes at a sensitive moment, as the United States is stepping up its involvement in Latin American and Caribbean affairs. Following U.S. strikes on Venezuela, countries across the region are once again under pressure to pick sides. Uruguay, however, is sending a different message: it will make its own choices.
