Every edition of the Olympics begins with a grand curtain-raiser and the creative director for the opening ceremony at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games is Marco Balich, who holds the record with 16 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies among his credits.

CGTN Sports Scene's Greg Laffradi sat down with the Italian to learn more about his latest vision for the upcoming gala.

Balich was very enthusiastic while explaining his concept of "harmony" for Friday's opening ceremony. But since the parade of athletes will be staged in four different locations for the first time ever, he also acknowledged that a major challenge has to be overcome.

A series of superstar musical artists will perform at the curtain-raiser, including Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang, American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey and legendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Looking back at his 16 previoys ceremonies, Balich said the programs have evolved in step with the development of society.

The 63-year-old closed out the interview by inviting audience members in China and around the world to tune in and enjoy the opening ceremony.
