Though the qipao dress rose to prominence in Shanghai, Professor Li Yingjun instead centers his research on Dunhuang. He discerns early China’s understanding of the body, space, and movement depicted in the flowing garment lines of the region’s murals. Such characteristics have continuously reappeared throughout the evolution of Chinese clothing, clearly visible in the structural design of the qipao.
