As Spring Festival approaches, Gangkou Village in Danzhou, Hainan Province comes alive with festive energy. Fishermen are busy preparing dried red fish, a traditional holiday specialty. This centuries-old drying technique was recognized in May 2022 as part of Danzhou's intangible cultural heritage.

Symbolizing prosperity and abundance, dried red fish is a popular festive gift. Made using traditional methods, local fleets catch red fish in the Beibu Gulf in the lead-up to Chinese New Year. These fish are then scaled, cleaned, salted and sun-dried naturally, resulting in a savory, long-lasting product.

Today, this ancient craft thrives in local workshops. Through meticulous manual work, fishermen blend their harvest joy with New Year hopes, keeping this heritage alive and flavorful.
