With the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics moving into high gear, one of China's celebrated heroes on the ice, Wu Dajing, is making an impact in a new capacity.

After setting a world record in the men's 500 meter short track speed skating competition, en route to winning gold at the 2018 edition of the Games in PyeongChang, the recently-retired 31-year-old remains a vital presence, continuing to lend his support to the national team despite hanging up his blades.

In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene anchor Greg Laffradi, Wu shared insights about his transition to working as a commentator. He noted that he sees the role not only as a way to support the short track team, but also to enhance the audience's enjoyment of the competition.

Wu embraced the change with a mature perspective, saying: "Retirement is something every athlete goes through eventually. For me, it's about getting used to and adapting to this change. But in the end, we still come back to what we do best – we never really leave the sports industry. In the future, I will continue to work in this field."

He pointed out that short track has become remarkably competitive, fueled by the emergence of talented athletes from multiple countries. "Short track speed skating has always been an exciting event, full of unpredictability," Wu emphasized.

"So, first and foremost, we cheer the loudest for short track. The rise of athletes from other nations has motivated competitors worldwide to strive for higher levels," he added. "I look forward to seeing the Chinese team perform even better on the Olympic stage. The first priority is not to pressure them and the second is to cheer them on wholeheartedly."

Already familiar with Milan from previous competitions, Wu expressed enjoyment in experiencing the city as a spectator this time around. He was particularly moved by Friday night's innovative opening ceremony, which he felt truly captured the spirit of the athletes.

"It was heartwarming to see them happily participating, representing their countries," he concluded. "Whether as flagbearers or participants, the athletes seemed more joyful, energetic and motivated during this opening ceremony."
