China showcases cutting-edge equipment at World Defense Show

Chinese companies have brought their cutting-edge weapons and equipment to the 2026 World Defense Show (WDS), which kicked off on Sunday in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, showcasing China's national defense capability.

Founded by Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), the WDS is held every two years to showcase the latest technological developments from around the globe. This year's event marks the third edition of the WDS, running from February 8 to 12.

Chinese exhibitors have put on display a range of advanced weapons and equipment for land, sea and air defense.

The China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), a leading provider traditionally known for developing and manufacturing land warfare equipment, has drawn significant attention with its innovative display centered around unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The standout piece, the Golden Eagle CR500B unmanned attack reconnaissance helicopter, is featured prominently at the center of their exhibit.

The CR500B can integrate seamlessly with ground-based unmanned vehicles, unmanned boats and robotic systems using a data link. This represents a strategic shift in warfare tactics, signaling that while China continues to produce high-quality tanks and artillery, its approach to future land combat is evolving.

The China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) also made waves at the exhibition, showcasing its amphibious assault ship and a robust array of defense products.

The booth of another Chinese company highlights an impressive selection of air defense missiles, including the Hongqi series, capable of establishing a multi-layered defense system addressing threats at various ranges.

Among the more economical offerings is a high-energy laser weapon, notable for its low operational costs. Unlike traditional weapons, this innovative system relies merely on electricity to neutralize threats, offering an effective solution against diverse drone challenges. This development reflects a commitment to countering emerging threats on possible future battlefields with cost-efficient and powerful technologies.

The aviation production area features the J-10C, a fighter jet that has gained fame in previous airshows and has continued to attract interest from military observers and enthusiasts alike.

Notably, the L-15A jet trainer is also showcased at the exhibition, not for its combat achievements, but for its success in the international arms market. During the flight demonstration on the opening day of the 2025 Dubai Airshow in November 2025, the United Arab Emirates Air Force's Fursan Al-Emarat aerobatic team, equipped with the newly acquired L15-A jet trainers, took the lead and presented a spectacular 29-minute aerobatic performance.
