A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Friday slammed the recent remarks made by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te during an interview, stressing that any attempt to split China or resist national reunification is nothing but a pipe dream.

In a recent interview with AFP, Lai once again promoted the fallacy that "the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other," and advocated strengthening Taiwan's defense.

In response, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said Lai has repeatedly distorted and challenged the historical and legal fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, while continuously inciting cross-Strait confrontation and antagonism, which seriously jeopardizes the interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, and undermines peace and stability in the Strait.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of it, the spokesperson said, adding that when and how to resolve the Taiwan question is solely a matter of the Chinese people and brooks no external interference.
