Why do Chinese people say 'gong xi fa cai'?

00:40

One of the most common Chinese New Year greetings is "gong xi fa cai" – literally, "wishing you prosperity." Behind this phrase stands one of the most important figures of the festival: the God of Wealth.

On the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, people traditionally welcome the God of Wealth. That's also why many businesses choose this day to reopen after a holiday break.

If you want to understand Chinese culture a little better – to help you on your "becoming Chinese" journey – watch this video and meet the one behind this iconic New Year greeting.

The artworks shown in this video are from a Chinese New Year exhibition at Tsinghua University Art Museum.
