China and Germany share many common interests and have strong complementary advantages, and strengthening cooperation is a strategic choice based on the practical needs of both countries, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Merz said all initiatives and actions put forward by China on the international stage are aimed at upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core.

He said China and Germany should demonstrate their responsibility as major countries and make new contributions to promoting world peace and development.

Wang said China's commitment to high-standard opening up will provide tremendous opportunities for German companies, expressing hope that Germany will also provide a fairer and more equitable business environment for Chinese companies.

China is ready to work with Germany to enhance practical cooperation in various fields and push their all-round strategic partnership to a new level, Wang added.
