China's Su Yiming has advanced to the men's snowboard slopestyle final at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, despite a day of unpredictability brought on by adverse weather forecasts that prompted the qualification rounds to be moved forward.
In the two-run format, athletes count their best score, and Su began his campaign with a score of 70.83 in his first run, gradually improving to 72.78 in his second, securing eighth place overall and clinching one of the coveted 12 final spots.
New Zealand's Dane Menzies led the qualifiers with a stellar score of 86.06 points, followed by Norway's Marcus Kleveland at 81.86, and Canada's Mark McMorris, who logged 81.81.
Su, who previously won a bronze in big air at these Games, also carried the distinction of earning silver in slopestyle at Beijing 2022. Should the schedule hold, the slopestyle final on Wednesday will coincide with Su's 22nd birthday, adding an extra layer of excitement to his pursuit of Olympic glory.
China's Ge Chunyu, competing with a cracked rib sustained in the big air event, finished 28th, demonstrating extraordinary grit under challenging circumstances. Fellow Chinese competitor Yang Wenlong, also making his Olympic debut, placed 22nd after a fall on his final attempt.
