A half-frozen lake beneath a clear blue sky, festive lanterns swaying in the winter air – this is Chinese New Year in my hometown, Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwestern China. One of China’s smallest autonomous regions, Ningxia may not draw large numbers of tourists during the Spring Festival holiday. But public spaces – such as Haibao Park, shown in these photos – are often filled with local residents enjoying the winter scenery and festive decorations. In the park, young women pause to take photos, parents and grandparents stroll with children, and families gather around small roadside game booths – tossing rings to win prizes or watching children climb and play on inflatable attractions. During the holiday season, these public leisure spaces become nearby and essential places for people to relax, gather, and reconnect with nature.
