During the ongoing Chinese New Year holiday, an aquarium in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province has put on an underwater performance that brings together two iconic symbols of Chinese culture: the lion dance and the flying apsaras depicted on ancient Dunhuang murals.
A dancer holding the traditional pipa string instrument gracefully descends into a tank. More performers in flowing robes follow, gliding effortlessly among schools of fish. Then, two lion dance performers make their grand entrance, leaping and tumbling in the water. In a spectacular finale, the Dunhuang dancers join the lion in a synchronized underwater dance.
