China opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures and urges the U.S. to cancel and refrain from imposing further unilateral duties, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday.
In response to a question about an additional 10 percent import surcharge from the U.S. and its indications of further duties leveraging Section 301 and Section 232 investigations, the spokesperson said that China is closely monitoring relevant U.S. measures. Subsequent adjustments to China's countermeasures against the so-called "fentanyl tariffs" and reciprocal tariffs will be decided accordingly. China will resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
China is willing to engage in candid consultations with the U.S. during the upcoming sixth round of China-U.S. economic and trade talks, and hopes that the U.S. side will uphold the consensus reached during the Busan meeting between the two heads of state and their phone call on February 4, the spokesperson added.
