World No. 1 Sun Yingsha of China beat Orawan Paranang of Thailand in four games 11-2, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6 in her women's singles opener at the WTT (World Table Tennis) Singapore Smash on Monday.
Several more of Sun's compatriots advanced to the next round as well. China's 14th-seed Shi Xunyao cruised past Italian qualifier Gaia Monfardini 11-2, 11-6, 11-7. He Zhuojia knocked out Chinese Taipei's Yeh Yi-tian in four games.
Fifth-seeded Kuai Man swept aside Germany's Annett Kaufmann. Seventh seed Wang Yidi enjoyed a relatively easy victory over the Republic of Korea's Joo Cheon-hui. Chen Yi battled back from one game down to defeat Austria's Sofia Polcanova.
On the men's side, Huang Youzheng beat India's Manav Thakkar 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-3 and will next face compatriot Xiang Peng, who eliminated Egypt's Youssef Abdel-Aziz in four games.
World No. 30 Chen Yuanyu edged 14th-seeded Darko Jorgic of Slovenia 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, gaining a measure of revenge for a 3-0 head-to-head defeat a year ago.
Huang and Chen reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals after thrashing Australia's Jee Minhyung and India's Akash Pal 11-6, 11-2, 11-4.
