After claiming one gold medal and two silvers at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, China's Gu Ailing became the most-decorated freestyle skier of all-time with six total medals in two appearance at the Games.
And in response to a question from CGTN Sports Scene's Zhu Mandan during a press conference in the aftermath of her women's halfpipe victory, the 22-year-old opened up about the importance of showing vulnerability.
Gu finished with two golds and one silver four years ago at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, cementing her status as one of the world's top freestyle skiers. Nonetheless, she feels there is a great power in displaying vulnerability.
"I'm not here to parade the medals around," Gu said. "I'm not here to stand on the stage and tell everyone that I'm the best ever. The whole point of this, is that if I can do it, then everyone else should try it too. If I can do it, so can you."
Gu went through a series of difficulties after Beijing 2022, including severe physical injuries and mental health issues.
"But what's important, I think, is learning to start showing that to the world in a way that is beneficial," she added. "I also don't want to be complaining. But the point is, I have difficulties too. Everything I that have, I've fought tooth and nail to get."
The three-time Winter Games gold medalist reminded fans that winning is never easy, despite her impressive margin of victory in the women's halfpipe final.
"I had to perform, every time and it's not an easy thing to do," she concluded. "So, the short answer would be, the power of vulnerability and the power of showing the real you."
