Uncovering America: I can't live in a 'culture of fear'

A growing number of U.S. citizens are considering emigration. A November 2025 Gallup survey found that about one in five Americans say they would like to leave the U.S. and move permanently to another country if they could.

Tara Milo, who moved to Lisbon, Portugal from Ohio several years ago, told CGTN about her concerns about violence and fear in American society and culture, which ultimately led to her leaving the U.S. Living in the United States, Tara was constantly worried about whether a school shooting will happen where her ex-husband worked, and as a woman she had to be aware of her surroundings when walking down the street. After moving to a relatively safe country, she can finally let her guard down and enjoy life.
