Piano tuner Cai Qionghui lost her sight at seven. Any unfamiliar route would leave her lost because most navigation apps stop short of the last 10 meters. In Hangzhou, a research team developed smart glasses powered by a domestic large AI model. The glasses can monitor road conditions, read signs and menus and detect obstacles in real time. To ensure safety, the team tested the wearables on over 200 visually impaired users and ran more than 2,000 street trials. They cut obstacle-avoidance response time from 500 milliseconds to 300 milliseconds, issuing voice alerts before danger hits. Now, Cai can walk unfamiliar streets on her own and step confidently onto the stage again.
