World No. 142 Wu Yibing's run in Acapulco ended in frustration on Thursday, as he fell in straight sets against fifth seed Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals of the ATP Mexican Open. The Chinese qualifier squandered two set points in the opening frame and failed to convert any of his eight break-point opportunities during the match.
The first set was a long, tight affair, with both men holding serve through a 6-6 stalemate to bring up a tiebreak. Wu jumped ahead early in the extra session, but Cobolli surged from behind to prevail 7-4. The stanza lasted 1 hour and 1 minute.
The second set was much more one‑sided, as Cobolli moved in front 3-0 with a hold and break. Wu briefly replied to close the gap to 3-1, but his Italian opponent closed things out with another break to slam the door 6-1.
Disappointment for Wu, but not without silver linings. His week in Acapulco marked the highest-level quarterfinal appearance of his career – a first trip to the last eight at an ATP 500 event.
After emerging out of qualifying, Wu opened the week with a two‑tiebreak victory over Norway's three‑time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud, just the 26-year-old's third time beating a Top 20 opponent.
In a round of 16 win over Jake Shimabukuro, Wu maintained his momentum – a break‑assisted 6‑3 first set, followed by a gritty second frame that went to a tiebreak, which saw Wu overturn a deficit to close out the contest.
Despite the loss to Cobolli, Wu made it to his fourth Tour‑level quarterfinal after Dallas 2023, Geneva 2023 and Hangzhou 2025, as well as his first at the ATP 500 level, a modest but meaningful elevation in a career that has been about resilience as much as raw talent.
