Uncovering America: 'I can neither afford commercial insurance nor get Medicaid benefits'

Global Stringer

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump in 2025, includes cuts to Medicaid of almost $1 trillion over the next 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that this could result in 11.8 million Americans losing their health insurance.

Medicaid provides health insurance to low-income populations in the U.S., a country that has one of the highest healthcare costs in the world. A November 2025 Gallup poll shows that nearly half of U.S. adults (47 percent) are worried they won't be able to afford necessary healthcare in the coming year, the highest level of concern recorded since the organization began tracking this measure in 2021.

U.S. youth Marvel has been suffering from Lyme disease since high school, which requires him to be hyperaware of his own health problems. Unable to afford expensive commercial insurance, he tried applying for subsidized health insurance, but was given a lot of misleading information by staff. "I am basically without any tool to facilitate my own health," said Marvel.
