The primary aim of the recent Geneva talks was to wait for U.S. military deployments to be in place, Tang Zhichao, director of the Center for Middle East Development and Governance Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said in an interview with CGTN.

After the talks ended on Thursday, the possibility of U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran sharply increased, Tang said.

There are two main factors: First, Trump was "unsatisfied" with the framework for the Iran proposal, believing that military pressure is necessary to force Iran to make concessions, using force to drive negotiations. Second, the talks were simply a smokescreen, much like last June, Tang added.

Besides, on Thursday, the U.S. military deployments, particularly the arrival of the second aircraft carrier, were fully in place.

This was the result of careful planning, Tang said, adding that it shows that the U.S. and Israel have completely lost hope in the negotiations and regime change is the true objective.
