The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has confirmed that a fifth localized ceasefire, facilitated by the IAEA, between Russia and Ukraine took effect on Friday to allow for repairs to restore backup off-site power supplies to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
"I appreciate both the Russian Federation and Ukraine for their constructive engagement in agreeing to another localized ceasefire," Grossi said on Friday. "It paves the way for repairs to strengthen the site's off-site power in our efforts to maintain nuclear safety and security at ZNPP."
Preparatory work, including mine clearance, began on the same day. Following one to two days of preparations, technical teams are scheduled to carry out assessments and repairs under IAEA supervision.
Media reports indicate that a 330-kilovolt backup power line to the ZNPP was damaged by military activity on February 10.
Separately, Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told Russian media on Friday that a local ceasefire is in effect around the Zaporizhzhia plant and repair personnel are working to fix damaged equipment and power lines.
The ZNPP has repeatedly come under shelling and drone attacks during the Ukraine crisis, raising widespread international concern over its safety.
