In Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), housing has long been one of the most pressing livelihood issues. Long waiting times for public housing and cramped subdivided flats have made decent living conditions a key concern for many residents. To address this, the current administration has introduced a series of measures, including Light Public Housing, to help more grassroots families secure stable homes.

According to policymakers, total public housing production in HKSAR is expected to reach about 189,000 units over the five years from 2026-2027, significantly increasing supply. Compared to the median rent of subdivided flats, households moving into Light Public Housing could save about HK$4,200 (approximately $537) per month, or roughly HK$250,000 over five years, helping many families reduce housing costs and improve their quality of life.
