We Talk: Panamanian sees the takeover by local authorities of two ports as a potential risk

Global Stringer

On February 26, Panamanian authorities raided the office of a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based conglomerate CK Hutchison, which had previously operated two ports at either end of the Panama Canal. The move came just days after control of the terminals was taken from the company against its will. Last month, Panama's Supreme Court nullified the company's long-term contracts to operate the two key ports.

CGTN stringer interviewed a local resident, Belisario, about his views on the forcible takeover. He described it as a potential risk, noting that China, as a major economic power, brings a large volume of container traffic through the ports, significantly contributing to Panama's economy.
