Three US F-15 fighter jets were mistakenly shot down over Kuwait in an "apparent friendly fire incident" on Monday local time, according to a statement released by US Central Command.

The fighter jets were engaged in an active combat with Iranian crafts when they were shot down. All six aircrew ejected safely and are in "stable condition," the statement said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
