China is deeply concerned over the spillover of conflict in the Middle East and calls on all parties to immediately stop military operations to prevent further spread, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday.
Mao made the remarks at a press conference when answering questions on the US-Israeli strikes against Iran, adding that they lack UN Security Council authorization and violate international law. She added that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Gulf states should be fully respected.
On the Iranian nuclear issue, Mao said China stands for a peaceful settlement through dialogue and negotiation. She added that China respects Iran's legitimate right to peaceful use of nuclear energy.
"We noted that Iran reiterated multiple times that it has no intention to develop nuclear weapons and has recently engaged in serious negotiation with the US. The issue ultimately has to return to the track of political and diplomatic solution," Mao said.
China calls for efforts to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond, the spokesperson added.
Answering a question on the Strait of Hormuz, Mao said that China urges all parties to safeguard navigation security in the strait and avoid further adverse effects on the global economy.
Mao expressed China's "deep sadness" over the massive civilian casualties caused by US and Israeli strikes against Iran, calling on all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law, effectively ensure the safety of civilians, and avoid attacks on civilian facilities.
The protection of civilians in armed conflicts is a red line and must not be violated, she stated. "Indiscriminate use of force can not be accepted."
