Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China now has 66 colleges and universities, with every prefecture and city having access to undergraduate education, said Muyassar Tohti, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of the Xinjiang Arts University.
She attended a group interview ahead of the opening meeting of the fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on March 4, 2026.
Last year, about 233,000 students were recruited for regular undergraduate and junior college programs, Tohti noted. The professional settings in energy, medicine, agriculture, information technology, culture and tourism, art, etc. are highly consistent with the industrial demands of Xinjiang, she said.
Vocational education has also flourished everywhere, she said, adding that more and more young people in Xinjiang are changing their destinies and brightening their lives through education and skills. "It can be said that today, the most beautiful buildings in Xinjiang are its schools, and the most beautiful scenery lies within its campuses," Tohti said.
