Iran has decided on possible candidates for the post of supreme leader of the country, according to Seyed Ahmad Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts responsible for electing Iran's supreme leader, who was quoted by the semi-official Mehr news agency as saying on Wednesday.

Earlier, many media outlets, including Reuters and the Washington Post, reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is a contender for the role.

Mojtaba is the second eldest child of Ali Khamenei.

Israel threatened on Wednesday that whoever Iran chooses as its new supreme leader would be "a target for elimination."
