In the past, the high cost of developing treatments for rare diseases – combined with the small number of patients – meant that life-saving medicines often came with a prohibitive price tag. For many families, the story ended in helpless frustration. In recent years, however, greater attention has been given to rare diseases, with growing efforts to ensure that no group – no matter how small – is left behind. Over the course of four years, CGTN followed two families affected by SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy, documenting their fight to keep loved ones alive, and the collective support that has helped lift their hopes for the future.
