China and the United States should commit to a spirit of mutual respect, hold the bottom line of peaceful coexistence, and strive for the prospect of win-win cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday. Wang made the remarks at a press conference on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress. A recent CGTN survey of 2,001 American respondents shows broad consensus that maintaining overall stability and positive momentum in bilateral relations is vital, with strong public expectation for deeper mutually beneficial cooperation and expanded exchanges between the two countries.
The survey reveals strong, cross‑partisan recognition of the value of stable China‑US relations. Some 83.1% of respondents see maintaining good ties with China as highly important, including 82.7% of Republican respondents and 85.8% of Democrat respondents. In addition, 60.6% are optimistic about the future development of bilateral relations, with optimism reaching 70.9% among middle-to-high income respondents and 85.9% among high-income groups.
Economic and trade cooperation serves as both the ballast stone and propeller of China‑US relations, and its stable, healthy development serves the interests of both peoples. The poll finds 69.7% of American respondents believe the U.S. benefits from trade with China. Meanwhile, 65.4% of those aged 18–24 view bilateral trade as fair. Additionally, 64.3% see China's supersize market as a major opportunity for the United States. Over 70% of respondents under the age of 34 shared this view, and the approval rate among those under 44 was above the average.
American respondents also speak positively of China's scientific and technological innovations. Artificial intelligence leaves the deepest impression, ranking first among China's tech achievements, followed by manufacturing and 5G. Some 67.9% believe China is increasingly taking a leading role in setting international AI standards. Meanwhile, 76.2% of respondents aged 18-24 and 73.9% of those aged 25-34 express interest in traveling, visiting, or studying in China.
The survey was conducted by CGTN in partnership with Renmin University of China, via the New Era International Communication Research Institute, targeting American respondents aged 18-65. The sample is representative of the US population in age and gender distribution.
