Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday that China calls for an immediate stop to military operations in the Middle East to prevent further escalation and avoid the spillover of the conflict.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at a press conference on foreign policy held on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing.
Wang said this is war that should never have happened and one that benefits no one.
The history of the Middle East repeatedly reminds the world that force is not the way to resolve problems and resorting to arms will only breed new hatred, Wang added.
The Chinese foreign minister also introduced several fundamental principles to correctly and properly address issued related to Iran and the Middle East.
Wang stressed respect for national sovereignty. "The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Iran and all countries in the Gulf region should be respected and must not be violated," he said.
Wang noted the importance of no abuse of force. He added that resorting to force indiscriminately does not demonstrate true power and civilians must not become innocent victims of war.
The Chinese foreign minister also highlighted non-interference in each country's internal affairs. The peoples of the Middle East are the true masters of their region and Middle Eastern affairs should be determined independently by the countries of the region, he added.
Wang said China advocated political resolution of hotspot issues and constructive role of major powers.
All parties should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible, resolve differences through equal dialogue and work together to achieve common security, Wang said, adding that major powers should uphold justice and act responsibly, contributing positive energy to the peace and development of the Middle East.
Noting China is a sincere friend and strategic partner of Middle Eastern countries, Wang said China is willing to work with them to implement the Global Security Initiative, restore order in the Middle East, bring peace to the people and promote peace in the world.
