The China-proposed Global Governance Initiative (GGI) could not be more timely, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday, noting that it fully meets the common expectations of the international community and reflects the shared aspirations of people from all countries.
Wang stated that GGI has received support and responses from over 150 countries and international organizations. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres remarked that the core principles of the initiative align closely with the values upheld by the UN.
The Foreign Minister believes that the key to GGI's widespread resonance lies in its emphasis on five core principles – sovereign equality, rule-based international law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach and action-oriented implementation. These principles align with the shared aspirations of the international community and reflect the common voice of people worldwide.
The clearest message conveyed by GGI is that the leading status of the UN must be upheld, not challenged; the central role of the UN must be strengthened, not weakened. Without the UN, the world would only be worse, Wang said, adding that creating parallel structures outside the UN or, worse still, putting together various exclusive blocs and circles is unpopular and unsustainable.
China is a founding member of the UN and a staunch defender of its cause. Wang highlighted that China calls on more countries to participate in and support the GGI, and to work together to revitalize, defend and strengthen the UN.
