The only equitable and widely recognized solution to the Palestinian question is the two-state solution, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi answering a question from CGTN on Sunday.

Any other arrangements or new mechanisms must reinforce, rather than undermine, the two-state solution, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed at a press conference on foreign policy held on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing.

"The situation in Gaza tests the very foundation of international justice," Wang said, noting that efforts by the international community to bring about a ceasefire are welcome.

However, sustained efforts are still needed to consolidate the ceasefire, advance reconstruction, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian question, Wang stressed.

The Chinese foreign minister underlined that the Palestinian question should not be marginalized again in the international agenda and called on the United Nations to play a leading role in advancing the political settlement process.

"Turmoil and war need not be the fate of the Palestinian people. They have a legitimate right to be free from war and to enjoy peace and development," said Wang.

As a responsible major country, China will continue to support the Palestinian people in pursuing their legitimate national rights and will facilitate international efforts to restore justice to the Palestinian people, Wang added.
