Liuzhai Village in Huguan County, Changzhi City, north China's Shanxi Province, once a poor village, has seen remarkable improvements in infrastructure and industrial development, with its per capita income exceeding 25,000 yuan ($3,634), a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) said on Wednesday.

Cheng Yuzhen, CPPCC member and secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) branch of Liuzhai Village shared the story while taking part in the Members' Corridor ahead of the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

More than 30 years ago, Liuzhai Village suffered from weak infrastructure and lagging development, Cheng said, adding that after being elected secretary of the village's CPC branch in 2011, she resolved to lead the villagers in shaking off poverty and pursuing a moderately prosperous life.

Thanks to the support of the country's targeted poverty alleviation policies and the hard work of local residents, the village has seen dramatic improvements in water, electricity, roads and internet access, while six pillar industries have been developed, she said. In 2016, the entire village was lifted out of poverty, and villagers' lives have steadily improved, she added.

Cheng noted that since shaking off poverty, the village has focused on fostering distinctive industries. By making use of the village's traditional liquor-brewing craft, a modern distillery was established and its own brand created, bringing steadily rising incomes for villagers.

The village has also integrated its industries with tourism development. Last year, it hosted more than 30 activities, including bonfire gatherings, fruit-picking events and rural food festivals, attracting more than 10,000 visitors from nearby cities, Cheng said.

The per capita income of the village has now exceeded 25,000 yuan. An increasing number of young people have returned home to start businesses, engaging in livestreaming and operating homestays, presenting a vibrant picture of rural revitalization marked by thriving industries, a growing population and a pleasant environment, Cheng noted.
