The US has privately asked Israel to refrain from further attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure, especially oil sites, Axios reported citing sources.

The request – the first time Washington has tried to restrain Israel's targeting choices since the joint campaign against Iran began on February 28 – was conveyed at senior political levels and to Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir, an Israeli official told Axios.

The outlet previously reported that US officials were dismayed by Israel's March 7 strikes on Iran's energy facilities, saying they were surprised by their scale despite receiving advance notice.

In explaining the request for Israel, US officials outlined three concerns: attacks on fuel and oil infrastructure could hurt ordinary Iranians, complicate US President Donald Trump's post-war plan to engage with Iran's oil sector, and risk provoking large-scale Iranian retaliation against energy facilities across Gulf states, according to Axios.

The oil-rich states are reportedly growing concerned about dwindling supplies of missile interceptors.

Sources told CBS News that Gulf states are running low on interceptors and are increasingly forced to decide which incoming threats to intercept. They said the issue has been discussed in Washington, but efforts to speed up new supplies have not moved as quickly as regional allies need.

In response to a question by CBS News, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington is prepared to help replenish allies' stocks if necessary, while ensuring US forces and bases are supplied first.

The risks to regional security appear to have reinforced Washington's caution over targeting Iran's oil sector. According to Axios's reporting, the White House views strikes on Iran's oil sector as an extreme step that should be reserved only if Tehran targets regional energy supplies first.
