Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday called on all parties to urge those involved in the current conflict in the Middle East to cease military operations as soon as possible and prevent the situation from further escalation.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a phone conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty.
Abdelatty briefed Wang Yi on the regional situation and Egypt's position and expressed deep concerns for the ongoing military confrontations. Following the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Security Council, Egypt calls on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further regional instability. Egypt appreciates China's upholding of an impartial stance and its mediation efforts, and is willing to maintain close communication with China to help de-escalate the situation as soon as possible.
Wang reiterated China's principle and position, saying both China and Egypt, as responsible countries, advocate for resolving disputes through dialogue, and are opposed to the use of force.
Wang said the prolongation of the conflict will only bring more suffering to the local people, severely harm the regional economy, and further undermine international and regional security and stability.
An immediate ceasefire is the broad consensus of the local community, and all parties should urge those involved to press the stop button on military operations as soon as possible to prevent further escalation, Wang added.
The Chinese foreign minister stressed that China stands ready to maintain communication and coordination with regional countries, including Egypt, and continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace.
