During the seminar, experts highlighted how the film’s portrayal of the renowned writer Cao Xueqin through audiovisual artistry not only provides valuable educational resources but also sets a pioneering example for contemporary university curricula by addressing the long-term gap in video-based materials dedicated to the literary icon.

The expert panel was made up of members of a research society dedicated to the classic novel A Dream of Red Mansions, the Beijing Film Association, and some research fellows from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
"The film breaks gender stereotypes to some extent, shining a light on both women and men. It subtly bridges the gap between genders, presenting a harmonious narrative that transcends traditional gender divides," said one of the experts.
An eye-catching aspect of this film is the gathering of six actors from the 1987 TV series A Dream of Red Mansions. To the delight of many, Ouyang Fenqiang, who famously portrayed Jia Baoyu in the TV series, took on the role of film supervisor. Adding to the excitement, his daughter, Ouyang Wenxin, also played a role in the movie.
Another notable cast member is Tan Zhengyan, a renowned Peking Opera artist who plays the male second lead, Xu Huan. His performance, filled with genuine emotion and a clear distinction between love and hate, evokes the charm of traditional Peking Opera.

In addition to the film seminar, cultural tourism related to Cao Xueqin has also recently been in the spotlight. The Cao Xueqin Former Residence Memorial Museum, which opened its doors to the public in late 2022, has quickly become a new tourist landmark in downtown Beijing. This museum holds great historical significance as it is the very place where the celebrated author once lived and completed his magnum opus, A Dream of Red Mansions.
Visitors to the museum’s exhibition halls are treated to an immersive experience thanks to an advanced auditory system. This system projects ambient sounds from the streets of the past, ranging from the lively chatter of vendors and merchants to the neighs of horses and the grunts of camels, transporting visitors back in time.
Thanks to immersive cultural tourism that spans books, films and his historic residence, the legacy of Cao Xueqin and his literary masterpiece is destined to inspire generations to come.
