The United States Central Command on Friday launched bombing raids on military targets on Iran's Kharg Island, the country's key oil export hub, US President Donald Trump said. He threatened to target the island's oil infrastructure if Iran continues to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
Located in the northwestern part of the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is less than 500 kilometers northwest of the Strait of Hormuz and serves as Iran's largest oil export hub, handling 90% of the country's oil shipments.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Friday that his administration does not propose and pursue any policy without coordination with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Pezeshkian made the remarks in a message praising Iran's people for their "epic" turnout at the International Quds Day rallies held across the country earlier in the day, according to the official news agency IRNA.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities, killing Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders and civilians. Iran responded by launching waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US bases and assets in the Middle East.
