In 1930, invited by China Institute of America and the American theater community, Mei launched a North American tour that introduced the artistry of Peking Opera to mainstream Western audiences for the first time. Performing in cities including New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Mei drew packed audiences and widespread media attention, sparking a surge of interest in Chinese culture.
