Major US chipmakers NVIDIA, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Micron Technology have continued engagement with China, expanding cooperation with partners and institutions despite ongoing technology restrictions and trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Executives from the three companies have visited China, met with government officials and industry representatives, and participated in projects related to artificial intelligence (AI), computing infrastructure and semiconductor manufacturing.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has traveled to China several times in recent years, holding meetings with officials and technology companies while promoting the company's AI computing platforms.
The company has also collaborated with Chinese technology firms on AI infrastructure. This includes projects with Lenovo on AI factories, and cooperation with GCL – a globally integrated energy operator and major user of NVIDIA's Earth-2 climate simulation platform – on green computing initiatives.
AMD CEO Lisa Su has also visited China, meeting with China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng to discuss the company's operations and cooperation in the Chinese market.
AMD has introduced AI-enabled PC products in China and promoted its Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) developer community while expanding partnerships with local technology companies and developers.
Micron Technology has continued operations in China, including its semiconductor packaging and testing facility in Xi'an, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
Micron said it expanded the facility with additional investment beginning in 2023 and has also participated in talent training programs with Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University.
Responding to inquiries from Reuters about its business in China, Micron said in a statement that "China remains an important market for Micron and the semiconductor industry in general."
Beyond official meetings, exchanges among engineers, developers, and research institutions continue through industry forums, technology programs and developer communities.
