NIH scientist's guide to a longer, healthier life

Song Chunni

As discussions around longevity gain global attention, the idea of "living longer in good health" is increasingly coming into focus. In an interview with CGTN, Dr. Lisheng Cai, a staff scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), shared his insights on habits and strategies to extend healthspan.

Dr. Cai emphasized that living longer is not the ultimate goal; rather, people should aim to live longer and healthier lives. Based on his research on centenarians around the world, he identified several key approaches applicable across all ages to improve lifestyle and extend healthspan. These include maintaining metabolic flexibility, regularly engaging major muscle groups, and building sufficient sleep pressure after retirement. He also noted that it is never too late to adopt healthier habits.
