China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Wednesday called for an end to casualties and losses in the Middle East conflict, pledging China's mediation efforts toward a ceasefire.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, made the remarks in talks with Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, special envoy of the president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to China, in Beijing.

Amid the worrying conflict in the Middle East, the strategic significance of China-UAE relations are even more prominent, Wang said, adding that it is more significant for the two sides to maintain timely strategic communication and enhance strategic mutual trust, which is conducive to promoting peace and stability in the Middle East as soon as possible.

China is ready to work with the UAE to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen the alignment of their development strategies and push the two countries' comprehensive strategic partnership to a new stage, he said.

Khaldoon described China as a reliable and trustworthy friend and is full of confidence in China's future development. He noted the UAE's willingness to enhance high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation in areas such as education, culture, energy and economy to promote bilateral ties.

Khaldoon also briefed Wang on the latest developments in the Middle East. Reiterating China's principles and stance, Wang thanked the UAE for its efforts to safeguard the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions, adding that this war should not have happened and there is no need to continue it.

China firmly supports the UAE in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, he said.

Wang also condemned attacks against civilians and civilian facilities, adding that China will continue to work for a ceasefire to restore peace and stability to the Middle East at an early date.
