China's Wang Meng and Yang Jinqiao made history at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics, capturing the first-ever gold medal in wheelchair curling mixed doubles. The victory marks a significant breakthrough for the Chinese delegation, continuing the nation's rapid ascent in winter parasports.

The Chinese duo took a commanding early lead in the final, though they faced a spirited second-half comeback from their opponents. Speaking to Sport's Scene's Zhu Mandan, Wang attributed their success to maintaining composure during the closing moments.

"In the final minutes, we told ourselves to focus on every single shot and not think about anything else," Wang said. Yang echoed this mindset, citing their coach's mantra: "When faced with difficulties, all we need to do is be brave."

For Wang, who also helped secure China's first-ever Winter Paralympic gold in PyeongChang, this victory is equally momentous. "In PyeongChang, I helped the team win China's first-ever gold... in Milan, we won the first gold in a new event," Wang noted. "Both represent historic breakthroughs."

Yang, reflecting on an eight-year journey to the top of the podium, credited the "strong support and encouragement" of the China Disabled Persons' Federation. "Without their support, I wouldn't be here," Yang added.

Beyond the podium, both athletes hope their achievement inspires a broader movement for people with disabilities in China. Wang credited the "rapid development of China's ice and snow sports" for providing the world-class training necessary to win.

Yang hopes the gold medal serves as a "guiding light" for others. "People with disabilities are not just a group that needs care, we can also be role models and make others proud," Yang stated. "To anyone thinking about trying curling: don't be afraid to take the first step. Just be brave."
