Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said on Wednesday that China is deeply concerned the entire Middle East is being driven into a dangerous precipice, during a speech at the UN Security Council briefing on Syria. He emphasized "the discussion of the situation in Syria cannot be detached from the broader regional context."
The continuation of conflict in the Middle East will only increase suffering for the local people and cause significant negative effects on both regional and global economies, the Chinese diplomat added.
Fu called for an immediate ceasefire to stop the war, prevent the spread of conflict, and swiftly return to dialogue and negotiations. China is ready to continue playing a constructive role in seeking peace, Fu stated.
