In southwest China, the mountainous province of Guizhou once had more people living below the poverty line than anywhere else in the country. But the same remoteness that held it back also protected its land. Its clean soil and misty hills have proved ideal for an unlikely crop: matcha. This year, Guizhou is set to become the world's leading exporter of the powdered green tea.
