Crystal-clear Yellow River shimmers at Shapotou in Ningxia

At the turn of late winter and early spring, the Shapotou scenic area in Zhongwei City – on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region – unveils a rare seasonal sight: the crystal-clear waters of the Yellow River.

With reduced precipitation and significantly lower upstream inflow, combined with reservoir regulation and sediment settling, the river turns transparent, shimmering under the spring sun. Visitors drift along the tranquil waters on traditional sheepskin rafts, immersed in the striking contrast between golden dunes and azure currents.

Stretching 397 kilometers through Ningxia from south to north, the Yellow River nourishes a landscape dotted with lakes and wetlands. Shapotou stands out as a unique convergence of desert, river, mountain and oasis. Benefiting from nearly 300 sunny days a year and exceptionally low light pollution, the area has expanded into diverse tourism offerings, including stargazing and resort experiences.

In recent years, Zhongwei has prioritized ecological conservation and green development, advancing pollution control and resource efficiency through guardianship of the Yellow River. This integrated approach is transforming the city into a vibrant destination where environmental protection and cultural tourism flourish side by side.
