President Donald Trump says the US is speaking to a "top person" in Iran, but not the supreme leader.

"We've wiped out the leadership, phase one, phase two, and largely phase three. But we're dealing with a man who I believe is the most respected and the leader," he told reporters at Palm Beach.

Iranian news agencies cited government sources as saying there have been no negotiations.
