Known for its striking, otherworldly terrain, the "Devil City" in Karamay, Xinjiang has drawn renewed attention after being featured in the Chinese martial arts blockbuster Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert.

The wind-carved stones resemble the remnants of an ancient city and different animals. The sight of sand swirling around the rocks, accompanied by the haunting sounds of the wind on blustery days, has earned the site its moniker "the haunt of devils" in local ethnic languages.
