A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Thursday criticized the Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te following the sentencing of former Taiwan People's Party chairman Ko Wen-je.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said Beijing had taken note of the case.

Taiwan authorities, in pursuit of political self-interest, have blatantly manipulated the judiciary to suppress political opponents, imposed "green terror" and followed an approach that rewards loyalty and punishes dissent, Zhu said.

These moves have sparked growing public resentment and opposition in Taiwan, according to the spokesperson.

Those who commit unjust acts will ultimately bring about their own downfall, she said, adding that such regressive actions will inevitably be opposed and rejected by Taiwan residents.

A Taipei court found Ko guilty of corruption on Thursday and sentenced him to 17 years in prison.
